Auburn University: Academic Programs Administrator

This is a two (2) year limited term position. Continuation of employment after 3/31/2025 is contingent upon availability of funding.

The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project is hiring a Program Administrator to coordinate and implement all aspects the college credit programs offered to students in Alabama state prisons. This administrator will oversee the men’s program at Staton Correctional Facility Prison in Elmore, Alabama. The position is based in Auburn.


Salary

$37,900 - $72,000

Essential Functions

Conducts day-to-day administrative duties as related to the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) college program at Staton Men’s Prison, including but not limited to:

  • Alabama Department of Corrections coordination and communication, course scheduling and registration.
  • Faculty and student recruitment, study hall scheduling and monitoring, technology maintenance, oversight, and expansion, library services management, and coordinating other academic support services, including tutoring sessions, transcript retrieval, financial aid assistance, conference presentations and publication proposals, coordination of research projects, and serves as first point of contact for Student Council.
  • Assists with new initiatives, record-keeping, and fundraising.
  • Ensures all college program activities follow relevant guidelines, specifications, policies and procedures set forth by Auburn University, APAEP, the Alabama Department of Corrections, and the U.S. Department of Education Second Chance Pell Experimental Sites Initiative.
  • Documents conversations, standards, protocols, and maintains accurate and comprehensive records.
  • Travels to off-site classrooms throughout spring, fall and summer semesters for class oversight and to meet with students to define needs and enhance programming.
  • Recruits and trains instructors and students for work as program faculty, study hall monitors, and/or tutors.
  • Facilitates outside visiting writers, speakers, and performance events at host facility, in coordination with University speakers and guests.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with AU programs , administrative units, academic departments, and student groups.
  • Gives presentations about APAEP on AU campus (classrooms, clubs, faculty meetings), at national meetings, and to the general public.
  • Assists APAEP Program Manager with administrative and professional responsibilities.
  • May contribute to and support processes for the preparation of grant applications and fundraising efforts. Maintains relevant databases to ensure accurate and accessible records.


APAEP welcomes individuals impacted by carceral system.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Level I: Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to position with no experience.
  • Level II: Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 2 years experience in project or program administration. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
  • Level III: Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 4 years experience in project or program administration. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Substitutions allowed for Education:
  • When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

  • Should have adequate knowledge of prison higher education programs and the Alabama Prison System.
  • Ability to travel to correctional facilities in Alabama.

Minimum Technology Skills
  • Must be proficient with or able to learn Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, Outlook, and OneNote.
  • Will be expected to use Mac operating systems.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at the college level desired.
  • Previous experience working with prison higher education program desired.
