This Community Conversation features a make-up presentation from scholars at Portland State University originally scheduled for the virtual Incarcerated Scholars Conference in October. Event attendees will hear from the first three incarcerated scholars awarded the Ronald E. McNair scholarship on their thesis topics as well as their research process while incarcerated and graduate degree ambitions.
Too often, conversations about education, reentry, probation, and court systems overlook the role of disability. This three-day virtual conference puts disability access and equity front and center, highlighting voices of people with lived experience alongside educators, advocates, and leaders. Hosted by Mokse Educational Services and The Community.
NCHEP 15 will be organized around the theme, Beyond Access. This conference calls the higher education in prison field to move beyond celebrating entry points and toward examining the integrity, depth, and potential of education during incarceration. In this time of shifting policies, funding challenges, and evolving student needs, sustainability means more than survival; it must reflect equity, accountability, and long-term impact.
