Community Conversation | Navigating the Media: An AMA with Journalists on Talking to the Press

Talking to the press can be daunting, especially when the stakes feel high and there are concerns about how the story will be told. If you're a higher education in prison educator or program administrator, someone who is formerly incarcerated, or anyone else in the HEP field with questions—or concerns—about engaging with the press, this session is for you.

Join us for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with journalists who regularly report on higher education in prison and the criminal legal system.

Panelists:

  • Charlotte West - reporter and editor of College Inside, an Open Campus newsletter about the intersection of higher education and criminal justice.
  • Lawrence Bartley - publisher of The Marshall Project Inside, the organization’s publications intended specifically for incarcerated audiences. He is also the host and executive producer of Inside Story, a new video series delivering trustworthy reporting to incarcerated people and the broader public. He has served as founder and director of News Inside, the print publication of The Marshall Project, which is distributed in hundreds of prisons and jails throughout the United States.
  • Martin Garcia - manager of News Inside, the print publication of The Marshall Project, and the associate of Inside Story, The Marshall Project’s new video series, both of which are distributed in hundreds of prisons and jails throughout the US.

This informal, open conversation is a space to ask candid questions about the inside workings of the media. Possible topics might include how to navigate interviews, what to do when coverage misses the mark, how to build better relationships with reporters, how to advocate for more accurate and ethical storytelling, and anything else you might have questions about.

Join us for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with journalists from Open Campus and The Marshall Project who cover higher education in prison and the criminal legal system.
