This page is a hub of resources for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students, their loved ones and advocates, and the educators and program administrators supporting their access to higher education.
The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison builds and supports the field-wide infrastructure to advance access and excellence in higher education in prison and through reentry.
We do this by convening the field, amplifying system-impacted voices, and mobilizing knowledge and resources.
Our two annual convenings are a cornerstone of our work: the National Conference on Higher Education in Prison (NCHEP) is our in-person gathering every spring; and the Incarcerated Scholars Conference (ISC) is a virtual event that elevates the scholarship and artwork of people who are currently incarcerated every fall.

We're a small national nonprofit organization. The Alliance has a small staff working to support higher education in prison across the country. While we read and value every letter, we may not always be able to respond quickly, especially during busy periods.
We're not a college or a prison education program. Because of that, our scope of work does not currently include:
If you have a specific question about enrolling in a course, accessing financial aid, or finding a program near you, a local prison education program or education coordinator at the facility may be able to help more directly than we can. The National Directory of Higher Education in Prison Programs may be a helpful starting point.
We have a list of resources we've shared with incarcerated students in the past. Before reaching out, please take a look at the resources, but also keep in mind that some information may be outdated.
