Campbell University: Career Services and Reentry Specialist

The Career Services and Reentry Specialist position supports the Second Chance Initiative by identifying job opportunities for incarcerated or formerly incarcerated Campbell students as they seek full-time employment. The Career Services and Reentry Specialist is responsible for building relationships with local reentry councils in North Carolina, seeking relationships with organizations hiring employees within the scope of behavioral science/communications, creating career plans with students before and after graduation, assessing student readiness for the job market, implementing new strategies and tactics related to job placement, and recording data related to student employment. The Career Services and Reentry Specialist will also build and facilitate a Campbell Second Chance Initiative Alumni Network for previous students to connect and learn from each other after graduation.

This position does require travel to our prison locations at Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, NC, Anson Correctional Institution in Polkton, NC, and Raleigh, NC to meet with our students within the Reentry Higher Education Initiative. Travel related to meeting with reentry councils or potential employers within the state is also required. Campbell University will provide a mobile phone stipend as well as a mileage stipend for travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Career Services Duties
  • Meets with current Second Chance Initiative students to identify career aspirations for this population that are viable prospects for justice involved individuals.
  • Identifies internship opportunities for incarcerated students to perform while in minimum custody work release.
  • Reviews student resumes and provides opportunities for mock interviewing in conjunction with the Assistant Dean.
  • Builds relationships with organizations within the field of behavioral science and communications who are hiring employees who are justice involved.
  • Tracks and records all student interactions to be used as assessment tools for compliance within grant and NCDAC needs.
  • Build a CU Second Chance Initiative Alumni Network for students to connect with each other and Campbell University. Engage graduates to participate in guest presentations and lectures with current students.
  • Provides data and reports for funders, AOE and Campbell leaders, as well as NCDPS. This involves use of CRM, Student Information Systems (e.g. Radius, Colleague, OnBase, and other systems.)
Reentry Counselor Duties
  • Identifies stable housing opportunities for students as needed.
  • Identifies gap funding opportunities for students related to transportation, food, and housing where applicable.
  • Provides students with reentry resources applicable to the student’s location once released.
  • Builds relationships with local reentry councils to identify barriers and challenges for career opportunities with students who possess a felony conviction.
  • Works with case managers, when applicable, to understand nuances of reentry for student population.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Stays current in best practices in carceral higher education.
  • This position is located at Buies Creek, with occasional travel to correctional institutions in North Carolina.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, and Information Security, including but not limited to FERPA and other state and federal mandates.
  • Uphold and abide by NCDAC policies and procedures.

Education/Experience

  • Master’s desired; bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience with prison education related to career placement or reentry services.
  • Extensive administrative experience and skills.
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit sector is also desired.

  • Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent coordination and time management skills.
  • Excellent data management and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of Campbell University and AOE practices and procedures, or ability to quickly learn them.
  • Knowledge with software systems such as Radius, Colleague, Blackboard and others, or ability to quickly learn new systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and common methods of digital communication such as web conferencing, web/text/ chat platforms.
  • The ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in different context and cultures, including staff at correctional institutions, incarcerated students, technology staff, DPS services staff, and others.
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with students, faculty, prison staff, NCDAC staff, Campbell staff and others.
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
  • Exercise excellent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations.
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet set deadlines.
  • Adaptability, flexibility and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
