POSITION SUMMARY

EBC’s new Organizer will be joining our team at a very exciting time - the relaunch of our membership program. This organizer will hold down one of the most important facets of our work, growing our people power. The organizer will hold leadership in recruiting and stewarding relationships with EBC members, executing monthly member meetings, and coordinating member events. Our members are folks directly impacted by the criminal system who are currently imprisoned, recently released from imprisonment, those with loved ones inside or lost to state-violence, people of color, poor and working class people, and people with privilege working alongside us for racial and economic justice. The Organizer will join our Program Team, and assist with plugging members into work all across EBC. This position will also coordinate EBC’s internship program for college students and community members.

PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Organize EBC’s membership program & community engagement
  • Support the relaunch of the membership program in coordination & collaboration with the Organizing Director, Co-Director of Programs, and other relevant member-facing staff.
  • Build and steward relationships with new and existing members and their families. Lead outreach and recruit new members.
  • Support directly impacted families with needs related to Ella Baker Center’s mission and values. Develop structures for family and community support and relationship building.
  • Bottom-line communications with members/volunteers.
  • Plan curriculum and facilitation, as well as virtual or tech responsibilities for monthly membership meetings.
  • Coordinate with other departments to plug members into organization-wide work, campaigns, and skill-building/ training opportunities.
  • Assist members and broader community with accessing the office.
  • Assist with the “Freedom Fund” mini-grant program for community members recently released from imprisonment. Follow-up and build relationships with recipients and hold broader “people-facing” elements of freedom fund.
  • Identify base building opportunities among EBC priority campaigns.
  • Represent EBC at coalition meetings & external partner events.
  • Assist with incorporating members and community members into EBC-wide political education efforts.

Event outreach, planning, and coordination of member events
  • This includes getting the word out to members, assisting with clearances necessary for prison site visits, coordinate transportation and access needs for events such as:
  • Lobby Days, Prison visits, Prison Mail Nights, Jail Outreach, Healing Through Action, Gate pick-ups, & Court Support.

Supporting internship program:
  • Develop internship alumni outreach & networking strategies. Build relationships with EBC intern alumni to identify potential further engagement and stay up to date on possible collaboration opportunities with alumni.
  • Develop and propose new opportunities and infrastructure for organizing-specific internship positions.
  • Assist programmatic and administrative staff with interviews and onboarding for interns in the programs department.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Proven commitment to social and racial justice, alignment with EBC’s values
  • Be located in the Bay Area
  • Team player collaborative attitude, comfort with sharing skills, labor, and being delegated work.
  • Understanding of state criminal-legal systems, including key issues and best practices & its impact on individuals’ lives.
  • Comfortable and skilled at communicating with a wide diverse audience, including Black and Brown communities, incarcerated people and their loved ones, formerly incarcerated people, people with low or no incomes, and movement partners.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills & practices.
  • Relevant experience with outreach, recruitment, canvassing, cold-calling, etc.
  • Displayed experience with volunteer, staff, and event coordination & logistics.
  • 2-3 or more years of experience in racial, criminal, and/or economic justice campaign work.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting areas of growth for members.
  • Experience with facilitation and public speaking skills.
  • Willingness to travel for events and outreach, including in prisons and jails.
  • Willingness to learn & use technical skills and digital platforms.
  • Open to learning and commitment to using 2SLGBTQIA+ staff and community names & pronouns.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish and English is a PLUS!
  • Valid driver's license or the alternative means to travel to the office, events, and other relevant EBC responsibilities.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This is an hourly non-exempt on-site full-time bargaining unit position, represented by CWA Local 9415.  There will be times when the position will be required to work in the evenings, on weekends, and will be on call during office closures. The Organizer reports to the co-director of Programs.


SALARY AND BENEFITS

Hourly range: $31.25 - $36.06, designated by professional and lived experience. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights offers a competitive benefits package to its full-time employees, which includes employee health, vision, dental, chiropractor, acupuncture, LTD, life insurance, EAP, paid holidays, vacation and sick time, and the option to enroll in a 401k program. We cover 100% of the employee only premiums for all medical coverage. Medical coverage begins the 1st of the month, after the date of hire.
