For The People: Data and Policy Fellow

FTP seeks a passionate and driven individual to serve as a full-time Data and Policy Fellow for a one year contract.  The Data and Policy Fellow will report to the Senior Policy Associate at FTP.

20-25% of the Data and Policy Fellow’s time will be spent on a specific project being conducted in partnership with the Possibility Lab at UC Berkeley. The Data and Policy Fellow will thus also work closely with a data scientist and graduate student researcher at the Possibility Lab. FTP has partnered with the Possibility Lab to develop proof of concept for a tool that would create greater efficiency in the process of reviewing cases for resentencing.  As part of the PIR process, cases identified for possible resentencing are summarized by parsing a prison C-file, which are files that contain substantial information about the person’s incarceration within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). This tool converts PDF prison C-files to an image, systematically extracts information necessary for case review from these files, and then stores this information in a dataset used for populating much of the information in a case review summary file. FTP is working with two California District Attorney Offices to begin implementation of the tool and test the impact of implementation on case review time. The Data and Policy Fellow will primarily support this project through the development of a progress dashboard and project management activities, among other tasks.

This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that is focused on helping facilitate change within DA offices, reducing the number of people involved in our juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, improving conditions for those who remain incarcerated, providing meaningful opportunities for success for those rejoining our communities, and shaping criminal justice policies to help build a better justice system in California and beyond.
