Georgetown Prisons and Justice Initiative: Teaching Professor and Director of Education

Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree program at Patuxent Institution in Jessup, MD, as well as the Prison Scholars Program in the DC Jail. The position will also serve as Director of Education for the Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) in downtown Washington, DC.


The teaching load is 2 courses annually, with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate level and courses to be taught in their disciplinary expertise as well as core courses as applicable for the BLA Program. Administrative responsibilities include leading the BLA and Prison Scholars programs and overseeing the planning and execution of these programs and other educational programs (in particular, the Pivot and Paralegal reentry programs) in collaboration with the faculty and staff at PJI, engaging in short and long-term strategic planning, curriculum development and faculty recruitment, advising students, engaging with internal and external constituents to ensure successful outcomes, coordinating with administrative staff, and collaborating with other Georgetown University departments and schools. Additional responsibilities will include fundraising and grant writing/reporting activities related to funding for the BLA and Scholars programs and activities. We are looking for candidates who have experience in prison education, pedagogic innovation, academic program building, and student-oriented missions.


The initial term is three years, and the position is renewable. Per the Georgetown Framework for Full Time Non-tenure Line (FTNTL) Instructional Faculty, this position is eligible for merit pay.


Qualifications:

  • A PhD with at least 10 years of university teaching experience in the social sciences, natural sciences, and/or humanities is required.
  • Extensive experience with prisons, prison education, and the administration of prison education programming is required.

  • Experience supervising and leading teams;
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills;
  • Commitment to working with marginalized student populations, and to social and racial justice.
  • Experience building relationships between universities and prisons;
  • Experience securing funding for academic programs and activities.

  • Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment;
  • Able to effectively time manage work on multiple programs;
  • Capable of interacting patiently and diplomatically with a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders.
