Georgetown University Prisons & Justice Initiative: Patuxent Site Director

In 2022, PJI will begin offering a Bachelor of Liberal Arts (new window) degree program to incarcerated students at the Patuxent Institution in Jessup, Maryland. The Patuxent Site Director serves as the primary liaison between Georgetown University and the Patuxent Institution (Patuxent) and works on site at Patuxent to assist in the implementation and ongoing administration of the new program. They manage and maintain program space on site at Patuxent, coordinate scheduling of classes and other programming, as well as the movement of students; assist with security clearances for all instructors, program staff, and Georgetown affiliates visiting the facility, and escort Georgetown affiliates to Patuxent’s education department as necessary; and organize and supervise program study hall sessions, and manage the program’s mentorship component and all co-curricular programming.

Reporting to the PJI Director of Education, the Patuxent Site Director collaborates with the PJI team and engages with students from the main campus, Georgetown faculty and staff, the administration at Patuxent and at the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), and other stakeholders to deliver a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree to students incarcerated in Maryland; and, through that work, contributes to the regional and national conversations about educational equity, poverty, and incarceration.

The Patuxent Site Director works at multiple locations, with the primary responsibilities on site at the Patuxent Institution in Jessup, Maryland; they also work from PJI office spaces on Main Campus and/or at the School of Continuing Studies in Downtown DC. Program management at Patuxent may require some work in the evenings.
