John Jay College of Criminal Justice: Assistant Professor - Criminal Justice

John Jay College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, beginning in the fall of 2024, to join the department of criminal justice and to support a new concentration in the science and practice of public safety. The successful candidate will play a central role in designing, launching and teaching our new research and teaching focused concentration in evidence-based public safety, with initial offerings at the master’s level.

The successful candidate will have a background in applied public safety theory and practice (problem-oriented policing, situational crime prevention, routine activities theory, focused deterrence, violence prevention, and similar); a strong interest in and ideally operational experience working with policy-makers and practitioners; experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods; and strong teaching skills. Particular experience with field interventions in focused deterrence, community violence intervention, or similar violence prevention or public safety operations is preferred. The position will also involve a close working relationship with the National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College, and its extensive national and international portfolio of interventions in gun violence, intimate partner violence, drug markets, and other high-level public safety issues.

The successful candidate will perform teaching, research and related faculty functions in their area(s) of expertise, share responsibility for departmental and college committee work, and other duties as assigned by the chair. Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to teaching and to develop and maintain an active research and publication agenda. The successful candidate must be eager and qualified to work with our diverse student body, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Salary

$52,667- $99,532

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD in criminal justice or related discipline completed by June 2024;
  • An active research and publication agenda;
  • The ability to teach successfully, complete service commitments and cooperate with others for the good of the institution;
