About Project Rebound: Project Rebounds are state-funded student success initiatives for formerly incarcerated students in the California State University (CSU) System. First started at San Francisco State University in 1967 by formerly incarcerated professor John Irwin, Project Rebound expanded to 19 other CSU campuses between 2016 and 2025. Project Rebound provides wrap-around services to students, including mentoring, financial assistance, employment and leadership opportunities, career guidance, and a social support network consisting of faculty, students, staff and alumni who can advocate on their behalf and help them navigate the college experience. Project Rebound at California State University, Chico launched in August 2023 and is housed under the Division of Student Affairs. We support individuals who are currently and formerly incarcerated through their academic journey at Chico State. Like all Project Rebound programs, our program prioritizes the leadership of individuals with direct incarceration experience.
