Research Foundation for the State University of New York: Assistant Director, Higher Education for the Justice Involved

The Assistant Director of Higher Education for the Justice Involved (HEJI) is a full-time, 3-year, temporary position in SUNY's Office of Academic Programs and Planning. The Assistant Director is a creative thinker and leader with a passion for social justice and a commitment to creating institutional change. Sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, this position will work to support SUNY HEJI's larger goal of expanding and improving higher education opportunities to justice-involved New Yorkers. Reporting to the Director of HEJI, the Assistant Director is responsible for supporting HEJI activities that fulfill SUNY's mission of providing "the people of New York educational services of the highest quality, with the broadest possible access."    

Job Duties:                      

Play an active role in defining SUNY's role and agenda in higher education in prison. Contribute to and support the articulation and implementation of a statewide college-in-prison system that ensures incarcerated individuals have equal access to quality higher education during and after incarceration
Work closely with HEJI Director, team, SUNY campuses, faculty, and community partners to build and sustain SUNY's college-in-prison community
Provide technical assistance and ongoing support to campuses in the development and expansion of new programming inside prisons and jails and re-entry initiatives in the community.
Help create re-entry pathways for formerly incarcerated individuals and help inform campuses on ways to be sensitive and receptive to the needs of justice-involved individuals.
Identify existing SUNY resources, programs, and initiatives across the system that can be extended to justice-involved students in deliberate and intentional ways (such as Educational Opportunity Centers, Higher Education Opportunity Program, Black Male Initiative, and other system or campus specific programs and supports)
Develop materials, tools, and resources for campus administrators, faculty, and students related to HEJI's work. Create and disseminate resources specifically related to the restoration of Pell grant funding and New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) funding for incarcerated students.
Develop and support a justice-involved student leadership group to advise, support, and guide HEJI activities and projects.
Participate in annual conferences to promote information exchange and shared learning. Participate regularly in statewide and national conversations related to the future of higher education in prison.
Provide guidance to SUNY leadership to develop SUNY's vision for expanding access and educational opportunities to justice-involved students.

Requirements:

Required Education/Qualifications: Bachelors Degree required with 3-5 years of experience in the field of higher education in prison (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered); demonstrated commitment to supporting underserved students; strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills; experienced user of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Education/Qualifications: Masters Degree. Familiarity with college programming in a correctional setting, Familiarity working with justice-involved individuals, Experience working with a state department of corrections or similar agencies


Additional Information:

Salary: $65,000 to $80,000
