University of North Texas: Inside-Out Part-Time Academic Counselor

Position Overview

The Inside Out Program part-time academic counselor provides comprehensive academic advising and counseling to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students participating in the North Texas Education Justice Alliance Inside-Out courses and fellowships. Some travel to Bridgeport Correctional Center required.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Job Duties

  • Assists students with course selection, registration, academic planning, and navigating university policies and resources.
  • Support students in developing educational goals, overcoming academic challenges, and preparing for successful reentry and degree completion.
  • Collaborate closely with peer advisors, faculty, and the Restoration and Reentry Alliance to offer holistic support and referrals to campus services such as tutoring, counseling, and career resources.
  • Facilitate virtual or hybrid advising sessions tailored to the unique needs of justice-impacted students, ensuring accessibility and equity.
  • Maintain accurate records of advising interactions, report on student academic progress and challenges, and contribute to program evaluation.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development focused on Inside-Out pedagogy, restorative justice, and culturally responsive advising.

Physical Requirements

  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
