This spring, three news stories out of Topeka, Kansas, shed light on the growing impact of Education in Action initiative by the Alliance for Higher Education in Prison meaningful work-based learning opportunities for incarcerated students, allowing them to use the knowledge and skills gained from higher education in prison programs in remote employment

In a feature from WIBW, Alliance Fellow Amy Ramirez — just days away from release — shares her experience as the first person in Kansas to participate in Education in Action. While completing her associate degree from Washburn University, Amy also worked remotely with the Alliance, earning a livable wage.

A second WIBW story takes a broader view, featuring insights from Ved Price, Executive Director of the Alliance, and Dr. Cris Fanning of the Kansas Department of Corrections. The article highlights how Education in Action fills a critical gap by allowing people to build resumes, earn income, and gain work experience before release.

Finally, a Topeka Capital-Journal article focuses on what this kind of work experience has meant to Amy.

These stories underscore the promise of work-based learning opportunities and the urgent need to expand access to education and employment pathways for incarcerated students.
