At the Alliance for Higher Education in Prison, our small but mighty staff are often engaged in the field (virtually and in person).
Our new Staff Spotlight is dedicated to celebrating those efforts. Whether attending conferences, leading presentations and workshops, or engaging in local initiatives, our team is dedicated to supporting the communities we collaborate with and serve.
In this inaugural edition, we look back on a particularly eventful summer!
Ved was busy and traveled across the US this summer!
In July, he presented at a couple conferences in Washington, D.C. At the Education Commission of the States’ National Forum on Education Policy, Ved spoke on how to best serve justice impacted students.
Ved also attended Jobs for the Future’s Horizons summit in D.C. Alongside Dr. Stanley Andrisse and Terrell Blount, he presented “Advocacy and Education Policy Priorities for People Impacted by the Legal System.”
Finally, in August, Ved attended the American Correctional Association’s Congress of Corrections in Nashville, where he presented “Education in Action: Creating Quality Fair-Wage Jobs in Prison” with Maine’s Department of Corrections and Jobs for the Future.
Lalee joined the Alliance team over the summer and also participated in several training sessions.
In July, he completed two virtual restorative justice training sessions for selected justice and non-justice impacted youth.
In August, he completed the in-person program, Prison-based Interventions for Muslim Offenders (PRIMO). This is a series of connected courses designed to help residents (Maine’s term for people who are incarcerated) build successful lives from their faith choices in prison. The courses aim to bring about an enduring and tested improvement in how Islam affects prison life as well as residents' sustainable well-being and knowledge of Islam.
In July, shortly after beginning as Communications Director at the Alliance, Corinne participated in the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) Summer Residency.
As a member of the 2024 cohort, Corinne spent two weeks on the Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY along with 19 other residents. Corinne and the 2024 cohort attended a variety of workshops and panels on topics related to college-in-prison and also learned the ins and outs of BPI’s approach.
