Adams State University: PEP - Mellon Program Coordinator

The Prison Education Program is seeking a Program Coordinator to head the Turning Graduates into Instructors (TGII) project, which is financed by a grant through the Mellon Foundation. This role is initially for 12 months. The Program Coordinator collaborates with the Program Manager and the Director (PI) of the Prison Education Program to establish, organize, and assist potential graduates who are presently incarcerated in becoming instructors for our program. The person in this position partners with the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) to find, recruit, and train new instructors to operate within the system they are in. Additionally, they will be responsible for designing a training program curriculum and providing guidance to current and future instructors.

Salary

$42,252 - $48,060

Specific Job Duties (Essential Functions and Responsibilities)

Help the Program Manager of the Prison Education Program to carry out the Turning Graduates into Instructors (TGII) Initiative.

Develop

  • Training program to teach potential instructors how to be professors and teach effectively in a carceral environment
  • Relationships and partnerships with the Colorado Department of Corrections to support and expand TGII, including maintaining a network of prison education contacts to establish meetings with potential instructors
  • Short-term recruitment, search/hiring, mentoring, and coordination role
  • Recommendations for course scheduling for Incarcerated instructors

Provide

  • Initial contact for outreach and recruitment for incarcerated graduates from various Colorado correctional facilities with follow-up as needed
  • Course mapping for CDOC in collaboration with the larger PEP Pell programming

Assess

  • Instructors' procedures and policies
  • Recruitment procedures and policies

Collaborate with

  • Prison Education Program Director and Program Manager to evaluate academic processes and make recommendations for improvement
  • ASU staff to ensure processes align with campus policies & procedures

Train, Supervise & Evaluate

  • Incarcerated instructors upon completion of Training Course Incarcerated instructors' teaching ability

Minimum Qualifications

  • Lived experience or directly impacted by incarceration
  • Experience in the criminal legal system
  • Master's degree in Humanities or related fields
  • Driver's license and reliable transportation for travel throughout the state  Ability to work within the CDOC system
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community        
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, corrections staff, and administrators regarding issues that impact justice-involved students
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversational, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement, and evaluate effective programming and policies, as related to this position
  • Ability to work •well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively and collaborate with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the incarcerated population
  • Demonstrated understanding of the local, state, and Federal prison system
  • Project management skills preferred
