Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Employment duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the editorial process for in-house publications, including literary magazines and newsletters, from concept to final production.
- Solicit, curate, and edit student submissions (poetry, prose, essays, artwork) with sensitivity to voice, context, and audience.
- Promote inclusive representation of student voices across all publications
- Develop and implement a sustainable annual publication calendar in collaboration with program leadership and students.
- Coordinate layout, design, printing, and limited distribution of publications, ensuring quality and timeliness.
- Work with incarcerated students and CEP staff to support writing development and editorial participation.
- Maintain records of past publications and contribute to the long-term vision for the program’s publishing initiatives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role include:
- Knowledge of print production and distribution logistics.
- Familiarity with the best practices in writing and editing instruction
- Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback on student writing and guide them toward publication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas in accessible ways.
- Skilled at managing multiple tasks, tracking student progress, and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
- Support the University’s Mission and Values in their role.
Required Qualifications
This position requires:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
- Experience in editing literary, academic, or community-based publications.
- Proven ability to manage editorial workflows from submission to publication.
- Familiarity with publishing and design software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Canva, Microsoft Publisher).
- Strong commitment to educational equity, social justice, and inclusive learning environments.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a unique and evolving educational setting.
- Ability to obtain and maintain clearance at the prisons. Given the job responsibilities, the person hired to the position must complete background and driving record checks.
- Willingness to travel to and work within a correctional facility, following all institutional protocols and procedures. Reliable access to transportation is essential.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate’s qualifications include:
- Experience working with incarcerated or justice-impacted individuals
- Written and oral proficiency in Spanish.
- Work Environment: This position is hybrid, with responsibilities carried out both remotely and in person at Tomoka Correctional Institution, an incentivized men’s prison located in Daytona Beach, Florida.
