Against All Odds

Isaiah McDonald

Knox College Prison Education Program, student

Illinois

Dream big and set goals without rigidifications, work hard to bring them to fruition and let success be your compensation. Prison can be a place where opportunity seldom knocks, where inspiration is shackled down by steel bars, handcuffs and locks, potential is stymied by necessities of the day, or a case of bad news pushing hope another foot away.

Where do you find the strength to keep marching forward, when the system creates barriers that make the journey harder for us, give a child forty years for a crime he committed when he was nineteen, more years than he’s been on earth, how is that not obscene?

Another malleable mind whisked away to rot, with a burden that scares support and forced to live out of a box, a man made grave built on unjust laws and deceitful rhetoric, that scholars barely understand bartering souls for convictions and get promoted as a residual, As long as the 13th Amendment exists, they have a way to get rid of you.

Well, I hope you taste it in your punch as I out plot all of your schemes, using my pain to fuel my inspiration, while picking the locks you’ve placed on my dreams, understanding when there’s a will, nothing is really ever null and void, or final…Not even the eight minutes they gave to George Floyd. For there’s no burden on this earth that’s bigger than the heart, so with the spirit of my ancestors, I’m prepared to face all odds…

Artist Statement

The following statement has been provided with the piece - “Against All Odds” is brilliant for its internal rhyme and indictment of US systemic racism. Isaiah performed this several times in class. It explodes as a performance piece. He shared this with the President of Knox College when he visited our final class for the term.

From the artist - “My name is Isaiah McDonald. I’ve been incarcerated for the past 20 plus years. My love for writing poetry stems from being in confinement for long periods of time. I wrote my first poem and been writing ever since. Thru writing I’ve been able to free my mind and heal parts of me that was once broken. Through a lack of love I have found something that I love to do. I hope to inspire and heal others through my writing and spoken word."
