As I contemplate where I am now versus where I was prior to this Hope Western Prison Education Project (HWPEP) Journey. I am convinced that ignorance is indeed a form of death. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, ignorance bares no relation to bliss. My refusal to take comfort in ignorance has led to the fulfillment of a dream and the shattering of a perpetuated cycle of ineducation in my own family. In this piece I set out to show the transition from the dark dismal cave of ignorance, to the bright illuminating light of knowledge. As I’m drawn to the words of the The Christ, “Lazarus, come forth”. I can imagine hearing him say, “Graduate come forth”. It would be fitting for us who have trained our eyes to welcome the brightness of education’s sun, resulting in our thirst for knowledge. We could never “hold (what Plato suggests in his cave allegory) that the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things”. It must be understood that for us, our emergence from the tomb of ignorance is a buy a one way excursion into the light of knowledge. Rendering our journey, a reallocation of Plato’s cave allegory.
