As I look in this mirror I look but cannot see
If I am the person who’s looking back
Am I truly the truth who brings the root of life’s history
The black man
the trendsetter even though we’ve been imitated
no one can do it better
No way, no how
Not then, not now
Not ever
I’ve been brainwashed for so long, but
I refuse to be washed away by the evils of a manipulating man’s storm.
They are the children of the future not the evil children of the corn.
In school, I was misled, taught that my history started from slaves.
And that everything that I was given
The white man gave
What a lie.
I’ve been a supporter of the stereotype, but I strive to change that hype
I’ve bared arms against my brothers and
I’ve flooded the streets with tears from their heartbroken mothers.
At times I am ashamed of my skin, not of the color on the outside, but
of the evil that lies within.
How am I not a role model to my next of kin,
I must be strong and put an end to this ongoing trend
Renewal of the mind brings change,
All it takes is a little work from this brain.
Black is so beautiful and we were created with no lack
Love, knowledge, and determination is all we need
To get back on track.
I am made in the image of God
So my existence surpasses infinity,
I am the creation of the creator
I am He and He is me
That is my true identity.
My name is Larry Chapman. I grew up in Chicago, IL, on the west side of the city. I’ve now been incarcerated for the past 24 years. I came to write poetry because of the way it sounded. Also, I found that it helps me find a piece of mind in this chaotic environment. The 2 pieces I’m submitting now are “Lost Art” and “I Am He.” The “Lost Art” came about because one of my daughters sent me a message through this app GTL that was once provided. Anyway, I found myself getting frustrated because I had to figure out words that weren’t spelled out correctly.
