As the artist behind the community fridge mural at the Dismas House of Indiana, I see this project as a reflection of hope, gratitude, and the power of community. Dismas House is a residential reentry program that provides a supportive, family-centered environment for individuals transitioning from incarceration. When the Director of Dismas asked me to create this painting, I immediately saw it as an opportunity to contribute while continuing to learn how to navigate and reconnect with the world around me.
The community fridge, located behind the Dismas Hub, is a place where anyone can leave food and anyone can take food. Knowing its purpose inspired the vision for the piece. I wanted the artwork to reflect the generosity, dignity, and mutual support that the fridge represents and to serve as a reminder that hope can be shared in simple but meaningful ways.
This mural was not created by one person alone. It took a community of people who offered encouragement, resources, and support, and their contributions are an important part of the story.
For me, this painting represents hope for the future. It reflects my desire not only to belong to a community but to actively contribute to it. I want my experiences to have purpose. I want to give back, encourage others, lift people up, and inspire them. Through art, I have learned that even in the darkest times, we can choose to focus on what is good and help shine that light for others.
