It was one of those days
My mind lost in a maze
On a stage in a rage
Reading my life story
Frantic, hands shaking
Becoming less numb
Reading page after page.
Wounds in my head
Transform from air to spirit
My subconscious in the background asking,
You think they still get it?
I wonder if they know
How much I blame me. Shame me.
Refuse to claim me.
This is my life but this is not me
My eyes closed, proud to get on my knees
Asking God to save me.
You may think you know me
Judging my words
Deciding what I must be.
Would you believe I’m a giant in a box
On-looking in the mirror winking
Like a sly fox.
Choosing my words carefully
Loving words and phrases that rhyme with selfishly
Hiding away the best of me
In this poetry when I’m off beat
I’ll give you a pep of me.
Still fighting with my words
How do they know me so well?
I have spent a lifetime building a warm safe place
But they reveal all.
Shaking my boxes putting labels on them
They’re mine. They're mutherfuckin mine!
I swear to God, if one fucking box gets opened!
Would what I keep make me a freak?
All are pieces of me. All have meaning. A reason.
My fear, my anger, my ambition.
Some sing, some dance, some scream. Some are gentle
As a child’s breath and others whisper with covetous lips
That drip with deceit.
I love the box with red stained lips covered in tears.
Beauty and pain. I’ve been so confused about that
Over the years. A crazy game called love.
The other I won’t talk about. If they hear me.
They would scream and shout.
Now that I think about it
I have said too much.
Willie Nichols finds inspiration from nature. Raised in rural setting nature has become one of his focal points. He loves reading poetry, leaning heavy on older writings. Self exploration is a strong theme in his writing but he also spend times with family connection and close friendships. He’s a family centered man. He has an AA degree from Indiana State University.”
“Almost Free” is about the revealing nature of writing. I can not hide from my words. My pen ties me to the truth, at times, revealing more than I am willing to let go.
